Welcome!
Just a short orientation: I have here 57 Flash animations and about an equal number of drawings. The first eight animations in Gallery 1 are from October 2011 to February 2012, and the earlier movies were created between 2003 and 2008. In the Drawing Galleries are selections from my many notebooks of the past six years. I include the drawings because they`re fun, and because I am relying on them more frequently as inspiration for ambience and tone in the movies.
Sometimes even a small drawn gesture will be so interesting that I want to make it move. To explore it`s effect on me. Usually when this visual kick happens I don`t do storyboard but rather an abstract narrative of line, shape and space.
Otherwise it`ll be something more obvious in the sketch like a figure, and that leads to a more concrete situation.
Either way that`s just the start. You have to make the vision real. I begin to draw and incorporate reference material into Flash, and almost always most of this is discarded as I make one draft after another. Everything transformed, assimilated by analogy.
Reduced to simplicity, making a simple shape be as expressive as possible. As long as action and gesture are realistic then graphic realism is unnecessary.
And finally I want my characters to move in a particular relationship with space and to have the audio reflect the correspondence.
